Madrid is the home of the best football club in the twentieth century. Found in 1902, Real Madrid is one of Spain’s top clubs and a founder member of La Liga in 1929, winning the first of its titles in the 1931-32 season. The subsequent arrival of the Second Spanish Republic quickly denied Real of their royal title (with the crown removed its badge) and they were referred to briefly as Madrid Football Club before returning to the old name in 1941. Real Madrid’s legendary status globally was set under the leadership of Santiago Bernabeu, who played for the team from 1912 to 1927 and filled in as club president from 1943 to 1978. In 1953, Bernabeu started to stock his program with the best players he could discover from around the globe, rather than simply the best in Spain, starting with Madrid’s most famous football symbol, Italian star Alfredo Di Stefano. The resulting team won the European Cup, Europe’s football championship, an exceptional five times in a row, from 1956 through 1960. Bernabeu at that point exchanged course in the 1960s and built a team altogether of Spanish players. In 1966, Real Madrid won its 6th European cup with a group of Spanish “hippies” who equaled the Beatles in popularity in Europe.
In 2000, soccer’s universal governing body, FIFA, chose Real Madrid the best football team of the twentieth century. After two years, the club celebrated its 100-year anniversary with yet another European club championship, with the foreign stars Luis Figo of Portugal, Zinedine Zidane of France, Roberto Carlos of Brazil and Raul of Spain. Real Madrid has won a record twelve European championships, ten Spanish Super Cups, and six world championships. It is one of only a handful couple of teams that is as yet owned and operated by its members.Along with Real Madrid, Madrid is also home to one of the most important tourism fairs in the world.
